Merle Haggard fans are about to have not just one, but two once-in-a-lifetime moments to celebrate the country icon's life and career. After the all-star tribute to Haggard on Thursday (April 6) in Nashville, his son Ben Haggard is set to perform a free show at a local honky-tonk with Haggard's legendary backing band, the Strangers.
Willie Nelson, Kenny Chesney, Miranda Lambert, John Mellencamp, Dierks Bentley, Loretta Lynn, Hank Williams Jr., Toby Keith, the Avett Brothers, Alison Krauss, Ronnie Dunn, Alabama, Billy Gibbons, Warren Haynes, Jamey Johnson, Kacey Musgraves, Lucinda Williams, Lynyrd Skynyrd, John Anderson, Bobby Bare, Connie Smith and Ben Haggard are among the many musicians who will pay homage to Haggard's life and legacy at the Sing Me Back Home: The Music of Merle Haggard concert, which longtime Haggard collaborator and friend Nelson will co-host with Haggard's family.
Ben Haggard and his late father's iconic backing band will then treat fans to a set of Haggard classics beginning at 11:30PM at Nudie's Honky Tonk in downtown Nashville.
“We’re honored that Nudie’s is the official venue for the Merle Haggard tribute concert after-party,” says Nudie’s Honky Tonk Owner and Icon Entertainment President Bill Miller. “In addition to members of Merle’s family and friends, son Ben Haggard will be performing with his dad’s band, the Strangers.”
Ben recently joined his brother Noel and the Strangers onstage at a gig in Indiana for a special performance of Haggard's 1978 hit "It's Been a Great Afternoon."
April 6 would have been Haggard’s 80th birthday. It also marks the one-year anniversary of his death.
