David Beckham was in the stands watching on as Argentina beat France to claim World Cup glory - and made a surprise appearance in their post-match dressing room.

Although not in person, the England skipper was shown on the phone of Alejandro 'Papu' Gomez thanks to the midfielder's new hairstyle that is reminiscent of one of Beckham's many iconic trims.

The 34-year-old, who was on the bench in the final, showcased his buzz-cut look to Sergio Aguero's Instagram followers having died it blonde - as Beckham wore on his move to LA Galaxy back in 2007.

In fact, Gomez had first compared his look to that of the former England captain while sat next to Lionel Messi in a live stream with Aguero earlier in the month.

Gomez said that he had indeed asked his barber to match Beckham's look, but his hair looked to be a bit shorter than Golden Balls with the blonde not as obvious.

Rodrigo de Paul then laughed about the look by saying: "I mean, to me, he looks bad. You can’t try to imitate Beckham."

Beckham has been in Qatar as a ambassador since the opening ceremony, even taking time to meet up with the England squad before their quarter-final exit.

The 47-year-old has come in for criticism for his hugely lucrative partnership, offering a statement to Joe Lycett last week.

His team said: "David has always believed that sport has the power to be a force for good in the world.

"We understand that there are different and strongly held views about engagement in the Middle East but see it as positive that debate about the key issues has been stimulated directly by the first World Cup being held in the region.

It added: "We hope that these conversations will lead to greater understanding and empathy toward all people and that progress will be achieved."

On the pitch, Argentina tasted World Cup glory for the first time since 1986 with Lionel Messi scoring twice and Angel Di Maria the other with Kylian Mbappe scoring a hat-trick in vain as Lionel Scaloni's men won on penalties.
