Shark enthusiasts have been left disgusted by the grisly scenes, reportedly captured in Tunisia on Monday January 6.

In a post widely shared on shark conservation groups, photographer Christian Kemper claims the beast was strung up after being caught by local fishermen.

The predator, was pictured covered in blood, its eyes bulging and its sharp teeth visible while a crowd of people gathered around to take pictures.

Kemper wrote: "Sorry for the graphic photos: January 6 in Tunisia, the white shark was caught by an inhuman fisherman."

One user said the scene was "just horrifying" while another noted "great white sharks are protected. I don't understand how people can do this".

Others said the scenes confirmed fears sharks are being poached in poor countries for food.

A shark-fan commented: "Shark like this will feed a small village for a week and the fins will bring a pretty penny.

"Believe me, poor people don’t care about conservation, they care about survival and making a living.

"We have the same problem with rhinos in Africa, Tigers – species being killed for their horns, teeth, fins and furs because people make money!"

It is unclear exactly where the pictures were taken or how the shark died.

Sharks and fishermen are known to come into close contact in open waters.

In October a great white shark came face to face with fishermen in stunning encounter captured on camera.

In the video, taken near Western Australia's Pinnaroo Poinone, of the men can be heard exclaiming "Holy f****** s**t, um yeah he is circling us," as the shark passes right next to the boat.

Dead sharks are also known to wash up with frequency worldwide.

Earlier this month it was claimed a dead shark that washed up on a New Zealand beach was dragged ashore and beaten by a mob of men.

It was unclear whether the female animal beached itself or was dragged from the sea while partially alive.

Meanwhile half a shark was found to have washed up on an Australian beach near Queensland just last week, leaving marine experts baffled.
